गुरुओं को सम्मानित करने के लिए भारत सरकार ने 1985 में द्रोणाचार्य अवार्ड की स्थापना की यह अवार्ड उन विख्यात कोचों को उत्कृष्ट कार्यो के लिए दिया जाता है जो अपने क्षेत्र में प्रवीणता प्राप्त करते हैं। उसी स्पोर्ट को आगे बढ़ाने वाले को यह इनाम मिलता है। यह लोग खिलाड़ियों के खेल प्रदर्शन को बढ़ाने तथा अंतर्राष्ट्रीय क्षेत्र में भारत का नाम रोशन करने वाले होते हैं। जिन्हें पूरा जीवन खेलों को बढ़ावा देने में लगाया हो उन्हें द्रोणाचार्य अवार्ड के लिए चुना जाता है। प्रोफेसर कर्ण सिंह जो विख्यात शारीरिक शिक्षक है तथा जिन्होंने आधा दर्जन  श्रेष्ठ खिलाड़ियों को बनाया है उन्हें द्रोणाचार्य अवार्ड मिला है। उन्हें ही श्रेय जाता है कि अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर के खिलाड़ी जैसे अजमेर सिंह, ब्रिगेडियर लाभ सिंह आदि को कोचिंग देकर महान खिलाड़ी बनाया प्रत्येक विजेता को 3 लाख का नगद पुरस्कार द्रोणाचार्य का कांस्य का बुत, प्रशस्ति पत्र, एक सूट, एक ब्लेजर तथा एक टाई दी जाती है। यह अवार्ड राष्ट्रपति 29 अगस्त को हर साल देते हैं। जो कैप्टन ध्यान चंद्र हाकी के जादूगर का जन्मदिन है।

The Dalai Lama, this year, conferred the highest recognition in the country on Mr. Tarun Baranwal, Ramesh Chandra Jha (Chanakya Prakashan), Mr. David John Christopher (CSE) for their inspirational contribution to Sports, Special Olympics, Disabled Sports, and Charitable Institutions in India. The top award was given to them in a simple function organized at Bodh Gaya, India, and by the spiritual guru of the 21st century, His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It was the 4th Dalai Lama’s religious congregation to be organized at Bodh Gaya and Dr. A.K. Gopalan, was the Chief Guest. All the winners of the prestigious award were part of the congregation.

There are three simple rules for the winning coach –


1. An individual can be recognized if they have scored or created a record or brought a player or team to a tournament/competition that has not been won by any coach before


2. He/she must be a head coach of a government-run sports academy, school, or university.


3. The minimum number of years of service must be eight years in a given academy.

Lal Singh: One of the best examples of this award winner is of the former Team India coach Lal Singh, who won the award for the coaches in 1967. Lal Singh is an Indian boxing coach, he is one of the leading coaches in India and has coached several great boxers like Manohar Lohia, P.T. Usha, Vijender Singh, and many more. The most admired achievement of Lal Singh was that he developed boxers like Vijender Singh and P.T. Usha from amateur boxers to the international stage in a short time. In order to give the international stage to these boxers, he received a medal from the President of India and his achievements are unparalleled in Indian boxing.


Mehboob Ali: A great example is Mehboob Ali, an Indian Coach, who was awarded the Dronacharya award in 1996.
